The MP for South West Norfolk and education and childcare minister, Liz Truss claims that ‘many nurseries are filled with toddlers running round with no sense of purpose’ while in French nurseries ‘children are calm and  learn to socialise with each other, pay attention to the teacher and develop good manners.’

What a shame Ms Truss knows so little about our Early Years Foundation Stage which is delivered by childcare providers in this country. How many nurseries has she visited? Ms Truss’ comments are ill-judged and off-the-cuff about what she believes is happening in day nurseries and pre-schools, and insulting to practitioners and parents.

We all agree that quality childcare is crucial in the early years and most welcome Ofsted’s announcement today to strengthen the inspection regime to improve quality.

However this announcement by Sir Michel Wilshaw and the proposals in More Good Childcare just don’t stack up.
